Hi ladies.. well i found out more about the copper IUD. It's quite safe and releases less that 1% of the amount of copper we consume daily in our food. When I went for my PP check up I mentioned it to my OB and she put one in straight away, no mess, no fuss, and no pain. Cost less than $30 here in SE Asia. I'll let you know how bad the period pain is... when/if I get my period (i'm breastfeeding). Thanks for you help and advice!

Hiya Galsynergy - sorry, long time, no reply. I got busy with my LO being born 2 weeks ago. I still haven't been able to catch up and do that research! Guess I'll have to soon or I'll get myself in trouble again!!(JK)

Hello Skeetaboat
I'm glad you were happy with the info. At this stage I haven't decided on a contraceptive option. It may end up being abstinence if I am not careful!!. (joking of course). At present I am looking at many options including non medical types but still researching. My body doesn't like the hormonal types.I think I will seek out a family planning clinic appointment.
How are you going with your research?

Hi Galsynergy.. thanks so much for finding that out!! You're a gem. Paragard must be an American brand or something. From what I can gather the copper IUDs do release minimal traces of copper, but as copper is a naturally occuring element that your body itself produces (or is it that we get it through food? I can't remember), it's not, apparently, a problem as the amount released by the IUD is trace. I should look further into it. So, in all your running around did you sort out a contraceptive option for yourself?

Thanks once again!

Hello Skeetaboat
I have a little info for you. Everyone I spoke to had never heard of the Paragard but they all knew of the Mirena. There is however one called Multiload which is a non-hormonal IUD with copper in it. With regard to costs. In a birth control clinic in a public hospital you are bulk billed for the insertion and visit, the Mirena is on the PBS and costs you $40 The Multiload is not on PBS and costs $100. It all may be different again in the Private Health System but it appears you have to pay for the script either way. Hope this is helpful. There is some useful info on the net if you do a google (.com.au) search on 'multiload'

That would be great Galsynergy. I'm living overseas at the moment but trying to find the best contraceptive I can use when I return to Australia after birth. Because I'm over here, I can't just pop into my local doc's office and ask. I did find an article on the internet which said the hormonal IUD (Mirena I think it's called) is covered by medicare, but I want to know about the non-hormonal IUD -- I'm so sick of all the side effects of hormonal contraceptives!!

Let me know what you find out!

Hi ladies, just wondering if anyone knows whether or not medicare covers IUDs (Paragard, the non-hormonal one)??

And if you've had one inserted, would you recommend it as a contraceptive method?
