Ki- Shh! :) Don't tell my hubby! I've had 6 months free of litter scooping! I love my kitties, but that is a chore I'm glad to hand over for awhile! LOL. It is good to hear the risk is minimal. My kitties are indoor boys too. My doc told me the risk was very minimal, but that to be on the safe side just let DH do it. I didn't argue with that at all!

TexasAggie -

I'm just going to copy and paste what I have been posting regarding cats and litterbox. Hope it helps.

There's no reason why you can't change the cat's litter now unless you just can't help yourself with the taste of feces and like to eat it.

You have a better chance of getting toxoplasmosis from meat which many of us cook daily than your cat.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC)...as reputable as you can get..... says cats can only transmit the disease the first few weeks they are infected (assuming they are outside cats). AND EVEN THEN, it has to sit around for 24 hours before it becomes infectious. AND THEN TO TOP IT ALL OFF, it has to enter your mouth!!!

So if you changed daily, for one, you don't run a risk "assuming" your cat had it in his/her feces.

Doctors should be educated more as they give incorrect info they read in a textbook but never looked up themselves.

You also can't get it from cat pee which some idiot doctors tell patients.

The great thing is that you can eat whatever you want to while you are nursing - YAY! Of course your baby might have a cow's milk allergy or some other type of allergy and then you would need to limit those foods. I know that you can, but I didn't drink any caffeine while I was nursing. I read that caffeine stays in our bodies for 5 hours and a baby's body for 5 days. I also didn't drink alcohol if I knew I was going to be nursing soon.

I can't wait to have about 15 rolls of sushi when I give birth!

what about the litterbox while breastfeeding? DH is emptying it now, but he was wondering if he'll still have to do it after the babies are born since I'll be breastfeeding. I haven't asked Dr. yet. Anyone know?

Thanks for looking into it, Tallhokie. I had read about it and would not have mentioned the increased risk if I wasn't pretty certain - I don't want to scare anyone.

Here is a link if anyone would like to read and know more about it -

Tallhokie: That's interesting. I was always told that pregnant women weren't any more at risk than anyone else. Thanks for the links. While I haven't taken any risks with it this pregnancy, with my first I ate deli meats ALL the time and didn't heat them up and DD came out fine! That was before I knew anything about it.

I agree that the chances are probably still very slim. Think about all the women who ate deli meats when they were pregnant BEFORE all of this information came out. I know my mom did! I ate raw fish with my first because I didn't know any better! This pregnancy, however, I have heated my deli meats and have not had raw fish as I am paranoid (a little) too.

Actually, just out of curiousity, I did some checking and the CDC and the American Pregnancy Assoc. both say pregnant women are 20 times more likely than others to contract listeria. One said especially in the 3rd tri.

Interesting. I'm officially paranoid now. Even though I still believe the chances are too slim to worry much about.

For the record, pregnant women are NOT more likely to get listeria than anyone else. It's just that listeria CAN be detrimental to the baby...can even cause death even though it might not affect the mom all that much. The likelihood of getting it is still very small. You CAN eat deli meats during pregnancy. Just make sure they are heated really well.

After breastfeeding it doesn't matter. You can eat all the deli meat you want.

There's an article in the resource center about this as well.

The no eating deli meet during pregnancy is such a new thing... and it's b/c there is a remote chance that anyone can get listeria from that as well as many other foods. (About the same chance as getting hit by a bus!) I've never heard pregnant women are more suseptible but who knows...

I mean, by all means, err on the side of caution and do what yuo think is best for you but I buy my deli meat at very safe, reputable stores and if it's very fresh, I eat it cold. Without guilt. I also eat feta b/c it's pasturized... there is no reason we can't eat pasturized cheese!

So no, I can't imagine that eating deli meat during breastfeeding will harm anything.

I ate deli meats when I BF and there was no adverse effect.

I am pretty sure pg women can't have deli meat bc we are 20% more susceptible to Listeria (I think it's a bacteria causing flu-like symptoms? anyone?). I don't think that is something we would pass on to our LOs. I'll definitely be asking at my next Drs appt! I miss Roast Beef and Turkey clubs!!!!
