My DH, mom and dad were all in the room, though dad left when it was time to push. I was trying to do it naturally while being induced and was in so much blinding pain that my whole family was crying while watching me suffer. Needless to say, I finally succumbed and got an epidural so I could relax. When it was pushing time (25 hrs into labor) my mom held one leg while DH held other for the 2 hrs it took before dd was born. My mom had 3 kids so I found her to be really helpful during birth. My hubby's parents were in the waiting room with my dad during that time, though DH's mom had asked if she could be in the delivery room (isn't that weird?). I think everyone was just so excited for us that they wanted to share in the moment as much as they could. I suppose it all depends on how close you are with you family. Plus we also had other family and friends come to visit us in the hospital later that day.

For labor with my oldest I had my dh, and then my mom and her husband came about 15 hours into it. My mom's husband was great, he sat and read his book :) My mom tried to help but I really just wanted dh. We had told them beforehand that for delivery we just wanted us in there, so when it came time to push they went to the family waiting room.

But your story reminds me of when my friend in college was in labor, her family was in there laughing as she labors away and she said to them "I don't think you better be laughing" they said, "oh we weren't laughing at you" and she responded, "I DON'T THINK you better be laughing!" No more laughing :)

At the Hospital where I had DS, I was allowed 2 other people in the room, including DH. It was really great. It didn't chaotic at all (aside from all my screaming, of course :P but that goes without saying). I really only wanted DH in there with me.

I know everyone was excited that the baby was coming, but when I'm having contractions and have been in pain for 15 hours (21 by the end of it all) and they were at a table in the corner laughing and having a good ol' time. Now I know they meant well but my goodness don't rub your fun in my face when I'm in the worst pain that you'll ever feel in your life. On top of that, they were bringing food in the room and eating it in front of me. When I wasn't screaming, I was staring at them eating my ice chips telling myself it was a steak. Needless to say after about the 18th hour they were all kicked out. Ha Ha Ha!
