Water breaking & delivery... how long in between?

With my first daughter the nurse midwife in the hospital broke my water, so that was about 12 hours before she was born.

Second daughter my water broke when she came out, so 10 seconds?

Third daughter, my water broke about 3 hours before she was born (she was facing out, which put pressure on the water and caused it to break early...very normal with babies facing outward).

My water has only broken on its own once. Usually my contractions start at home and I stay there until they get to be about 5-7 minutes apart and the pain is pretty much unbearable. Usually by the time I get to the hospital my water has to be broken, I push a few times, and there's my next bundle of joy. I said if I keep going at this rate, baby number 6 will be born at home.

My water broke at home at about midnight, I got up slowly got ready to go. Contractions started with a vengeance about 10 minutes later. They were less than a minute apart all the way to the hospital. When I got there I was only 3cm so they said it would be a while, well 2 minutes later i was 6 cm and 5 mins later I was pushing. Emeri was born at 12:47 20 mins after arrival at the hospital! I was 36 weeks, but had been on bedrest and had preterm labor starting at 27 weeks.

When my first son was born 11 1/2 yrs ago my water broke about two hours before he was born, (34 weeks). With my second son born almost 2 yrs ago the midwife had to break the waters as nothing was progressing despite being fully dilated. He was born within 1/2 an hour.

My water broke at around midnight and it wasn't until about 19 hours later until I delivered. Actually I ended up having an unexpected c-section as soon as we discovered that the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck.

When my water broke, I was told by my doctor not to worry and just go the hospital in the morning. I was so uneasy knowing that there is less liquid for the baby. Anyone else had doctors who told them not to rush to the hospital immediately?

Contractions didn't start until about an hour after my water broke. I wasn't 100% sure it was my water, so I didn't go in until the contractions had been coming about 30 minutes, 4 minutes apart and lasting a minute and a half. I had no easing into labor at all, my 2nd contraction was 4 minutes after the first one.

I think it would have been a little less, but since my water had already broken, they didn't want to check me too often. I was handling the contractions pretty well, and transition happened super fast, so they didn't think I was ready to push but I was! I sort of felt ready, but I started second-guessing myself, thinking that I was only wanting to push rather than needing to push.

When Research is Flawed: Should Labor Be Induced Immediately with Term Prelabor Rupture of Membranes?

Unfortunately it has been ingrained into our society to believe once ROM (rupture of membranes) occurs labor must begin within 24hrs because you might get an infection. That is false. Infection usually occuers after ROM when you are birthing in a hospital (not a sterile environment) and you allow vaginal exams (VE). With each VE you allow you are just allowing more and more bacteria. As you know in a hospital birth you may have countless VE's. That is why it is prudent to NOT allow any VE(or baths) until active labor begins, no sex, cotton underwear, etc. When ROM have occured a woman should monitor her temp about every 6hrs, up her intake of vitamin C. This watches for signs of infection and helps to boost her immune system/keep infection away.

Also when ROM occurs labor may not begin for days...maybe even weeks. That is OKAY! You are constantly producing amniotic fluid and it is completely replenished every 3hrs. When ROM occurs a woman (if let alone) will go into labor within 48-72hrs, I do know a woman that went several days before labor begin. 70% of women with PROM will give birth within 24 hours, 90% of the women with PROM will have given birth within 48 hours. Only 2-5% will not have given birth after 72 hours, and that number remains the same even after 7 days PROM occurs in about 10% of pregnancies.

My water broke at 4am. I woke my hubby at 0415, got to the hospital about 0500, and found out I was dilated 4cm, so I was admitted. I was having infrequent contractions from the time my water broke. I received the epidural (back labor's no joke! thought I was going to cry!) at about 1000 (maybe earlier, I was sooo tired I'm not sure of the details, had gone to bed about midnight), and had my beautiful baby boy at 1429 (2:29pm). So 10 and 1/2 hours total for me. I was right at 37 wks, according to the doctors (but my son was actually five days younger, per ultrasounds, they just didn't change his due date, LOL).

I had two very quick, great labours. No time for meds, just laughing gas. The nurses joked that I should camp on the hospital steps next time just in case.

I was in the hospital with pre-eclampsia when my water broke. (sounded like a pop gun going off.)

Then I had the urge to push...but they wanted me to wait until the doctor was there. I think I pushed 3 times and ds was born. Probably would have been born sooner if the doctor had been there but I had a great nurse so I was not worried.

Water breaking was the first sign of labor

Contractions started immediately after my water broke and intensified quickly

17 hours later I caved in and begged for the epidural

1/2 hour after that I was totally dialated & ready to push

1/2 hour after THAT I was holding my son!

TOTAL: 18 hours

17 hours for me. And it ended in a c-section because my sons head was a little too big and after 3 hours in the birthcanal he got stressed out. I'm due in 7 weeks with my second and I sure hope it goes a little faster!

I am just curious...

for those of you that had normal vaginal deliveries and your water broke 'on it's own', how long from the time that your water broke until the baby was delivered?

My stats:

Child: First baby
How far along: 40 weeks, 1 day
Water broke: 3:30 am
Pushing: 1/2 hour
Delivery: 8:00 am.
Total: 4 1/2 hours.

I was 10cm and 'ready to push' when I got to the hospital, so I think I could've delivered even faster, but since I was completely panicked/freaking-out (at how fast things were moving) that my doc gave me something to calm me down (and made me loopy). That slowed the contractions down and I was able to get a spinal block and then I started pushing.
