Janet,

Nope, no other meds! I was ready I guess. I was 3cm and about 60%.....after they inserted the Cervidel, it took about 4 hours before I started contracting. And then about 6 hours until delivery. So, I was able to get some rest before all the pain began. I was 4 cm when they checked me at 7am and I had Ellie at 9 am, so the last part of labor was very fast and intense.... up until that point it was almost painless!
I think that if your body is ready, inductions are no problem.
I was induced with PIT for DD #2, also a quick labor and delivery.
I was induced due to preeclampsia, but my body was still ready.

around here they will not induce before you are 10-14 days past your due date. but will not let you go beyond 14 days past your due date due to the fact that the baby is more likely to have passed his/her first meconium in utero.

Just FYI

Induction medications come in a 2 categories.

1. If your cervix is closed - (or less than 3 cm) - you need something to soften (efface) and dilated (open) your cervix.

Medications in the category are
a) cervidil - usually a vaginally inserted suppository - that makes the cervix do what it should
b) laminaria - a seaweed based product - that looks like a short pen or cigarette - it gets stuck directly up the center of the cervix and over time expands like a sponge to push against the walls of the cervix and dilate it. (this product is often used for elective late terminations) - but in some regions lams are used for cervical induction too.
c) home remedies - supposedly - if you have sex - in the ejaculate fluid - there is a natural substance called prostaglandin - that will help the cervix efface.

The other part of induction is getting contractions to start -
1) this is when they use a medication called PITOCIN (or PIT). This is the exact hormone (made synthetically) that your body makes to start contractions. It is given via an IV. (there is no oral or suppository form). The dose is titrated up to make contractions more uniform / stronger / occur more frequent.

ONE POINT - You cannot be "pitted" against a CLOSED cervix. Meaning- there's no use in contracting if your cervical exam isn't progressing. That's just squeezing the uterus and baby against a CLOSED opening.

So often - you must have at least 1 med from each category.

And if you've been pitted for hours with still no dilation (i.e. you have a cervix of "steel" that just won't dilate) then you'll end up with having been in labor for hours and a csxn anyway.

Natural methods to bring on Pitocin include nipple stimulation etc...

So - be AWARE - when you are induced. Keep track of your exam progress by asking them about it and how many times they RN's have "up'd the PIT" and when you got your cervidil - etc. It's OK to be on top of things.

Also BEFORE you start induction - ask your doctor - what are the criteria for failure of induction ? Like...
1) X hours (6-8-10) of effective ctxns without significant change in dilation
2) 1 or 2 rounds of cervidil
3) obivously fetal distress stops induction and gets you a section
4) max dose of pit for X hours
5) your request that this isn't going well for you and is stressing you and baby out

Seriously - most inductions do work - but know your boundaries and limits and when to change course.

Lastly - if the baby doesn't drop into the pelvis - meaning the station stays to high - you'll never push it out. And if there's CPD (cephalo-pelvic disproportion) a fancy term that means the baby's big head will never fit through your pelvic opening - you'll end up with a section. OR if the baby is in a hard lie (meaning not dropped into OA or OP) then no amount of pitting and cervical opening will help you either...

I would also ask about the drug they are planning on using to induce you. If it's the same one I'm thinking of, that drug isn't even intended to be used as an inducing agent...

Due dates are just guestimates to begin with...so just because you haven't gone as of your due date, you're not at any more risk than the rest of us. I know my doctor is planning on giving me at least 10 days past my EDD (expected due date) and I've known people who have gone two weeks.

Just an FYI, I would really do some reasearch about the induction before you agree, in everything i have read, that is not a valid reason for induction. i'm not trying to scare you, but I just think people should know all their options...I think sometimes dr's don't tell you all the info, and people just assume they know best. Again Just trying to educate you, not to say your dr doesn't know what he is doing!

Here are the reasons from what to expect when your expecting

A fetus that is not thriving
When the placenta isn't functioning well
The Membranes have ruptured and labor hasn't started within 24 hours
The amniotic fuild is infected
42 weeks or more of pregnancy
Mom has GD
Mom has Preeclampsia
Mom has chronic illness
Fetus has Severe RH disease.

MIBKGB: At least you were 3 cm but I dont know if I'll be dialated at all, they only used cervidil on you? no other induction method like pitocin? How long did it take after you had the cervidil? Sorry for so many questions!

Cuddlebugs: Thanks, I hope she decides to come on her own too and Dont worry I'm sure nothing will happen if you go over even a week but I wont risk it if I were you and probably demand to be induced after monday, my Dr recommended sex (haha right) walking and nipple stimulation so I'll try all that and we'll see.
I'll be praying that you go soon and if not that your Dr schedules you for induction.

I was just induced with Cervidel. I was 3cm when I went in. All it is, is a supository that they place behind your cervix. It is painless. No IV. I thought it was great.....it was all I needed....to make me me go into active labor. Much better then PIT!

Ok I had my 39-week appt this morning and he didnt even check me! He said he doesnt want me to go over my due date which in next monday because there's a risk she can go potty inside and all that so he asked me if I wanted to get induced sunday night and have her monday and I said yes but I dont wanna get induced at all! I wanna go on my own :( but if I make it to sunday I'll just go

My question is: How does cervidil work? is it and IV? Have any of you girls been induced with it and what was you experience?
Sorry I'm paranoid but I just hate the induction idea...aahhhh
