We went straight to undies from diapers b/c 1) I'm cheap & didn't want to spend $$ on pull-ups :) and 2) I felt it was confusing to them to wear undies in day and diapers at night. Nate cought right on & never had many accidents. With Danny we changed alot of sheets (in the morning, for some reason he never woke & cried or anything when he peeded the bed at night, thankfully) for a few weks to a month or so. But then eventually he stopped having accidents as well. Sounds totally gross but we had little potty chairs in their rooms for awhile when they first traned so they could go themselves at night when they had too. They ahve nite lites in their room so they can see, & wipes and all. And they would go at some point cause there would be pee in them in the AM when I went to wake them up for the day. Now they are able to go all night and just go potty in the AM. Sometimes I'll hear them get up & go potty early in the AM & then they go back to bed fine. They have milk at dinner around 6:30 & a tiny bit of water after they brush their teeth @ bedtime around 8pm, but thats it. No big drinks right before bedtime, & they never seem to ask for one so maybe neither are big drinkers....

Just wanted to say thanks again for the support ladies! I have stuck with it and so glad I did! Madelyn has only had 2 potty accidents since last week Wednesday! 2 poop accidents too... but she only pooed twice so we'll see how the next poo goes! So thanks so much for the support and advice! If I didn't have you guys I would have probably listened to my huby and stopped training her. But it seems to me she was/is ready :) Today is the first day she has worn undies to day care (I only work Thursdays) so HOPEFULLY the change in atmosphere doesn't scare her and she still does good :)
(and also thanks for letting me talk about my almost 2 year old even though our October board is 4 year olds!)

Yay Madelyn!! It's so awesome that she's going potty! From personal experience with Ezra, going poop was the hardest - but we worked through it and with Zoe we're working through it as well. She had one accident last night, but again, it's because of the laxitive regimine she's on, but today we had an accident free day - even with going to Disneyland! Madelyn's doing amazing though, especially for not being even 2 years old yet!

With the pull up thing I think some kids just sleep so sound that they don't realize they are going to the bathroom. Are your kiddos sound sleepers?
Today Madelyn had zero pee accidents again!! I'm so excited! (trying not to et too excited since I know we still have a ways to go) And we even took a trip to grandma and grandpas! She did poop in her undies. She did it in the bathroom right next to the toilet. So... I bought her colorful cookies as her poopy treats. She loooves cookies... I hope it works. we'll see tomorrow! I'm so glad I stuck with the training though. Because she was obviously ready.

Just wanted to drop in and say yesterday Madelyn had zero accidents and went six times on the potty!!! We will see how today goes! I'm sure not that good but we'll see! So no pull up advice. We were/are always only diapers and underwear.

Danni- Isaiah is still in a pull up most nights. Because he is always drinking too. I haven't been very strict with it. He wakes up dry about half the time, but I'd really like to put him in undies soon and be firm with the no drinking thing... He goes to bed at 8 so I'm going to start no drinking after 6:30 and see if he wakes up dry. If he does for a few days, I'll try the undies I think. Micah (turning 3 this month) is actually still in diapers too. We're going to start training very, very soon. I'm just bad at this part of parenting!!!
Anyway, I don't have much PTing advice besides stick with it- unless the LO is really, really pulling away and you don't want to force it. They really just kinda "get it" when they're ready it seems... it just clicks. In my opinion, Steph, I wouldn't be *too* surprised if she is interested and then pulls away. I remember our pedi always saying that around 2, they get interested but then lose their interest- and it's best not to force anything (not that I think you would haha!). As the pooping, I don't really have any specific advice either besides keeping a high fiber diet. Good luck! That would be awesome if she trained early!!
(Congrats, Mel!)

Any advice on getting rid of the nighttime pull up?
Alex does not get up to pee in the middle of the night and i've tried not giving him anything to drink an hour before bedtime, and make him pee before bed. Maybe I should increase to 2hr before bed? It's such a hard habit to break because he likes his drinks!!! But now with baby #2 coming, buying a pack of pull ups a month for my 4yr old is getting old!?!
Curious if anyone else's 4yr olds still wear pull up at night?

It's funny how each child is different.... I don't really remember training Danny either. He basically trained himself, haha. Nate I did that 3 day method with & worked like a charm. Both were fully trained (night & day, no pull ups ever) within a week. I would keep pushing her along, I hear girls can be ready earlier?? Both my boys went to underwear a few mths before their 3rd bdays (Summer time).

Thanks so much for all the advice! I think I'm going to stick with it. I feel like she is doing good. Yesterday she wore a diaper to day care so that stinks but she peed on the potty when she got home. She did finally poop in her diaper yesterday too. And this morning first thing she sat on the potty and went! So yay!! I don't mind cleaning up the mess if she has an accident so I'm going to keep doing it. I think my hubby thinks she isn't ready because everytime isn't on the potty but that's why its called potty training. She needs to learn it. So I'm going to teach her ;)

Oooh, congratulations! We'll keep your secret!
With all the hospitalizations, I think you're allowed a freebie on this one, Mel. I know when Sam is in the hospital they are always pushing for diapers there too. It's easier in the long run.
Blessings!

She's doing really well, I wouldn't stop now. Villo was completely potty trained by 21 months and in my part of the world - where disposable diapers were not available - even my generation was potty trained around the age of two. My friend's daughter had this poop issue going on and finally they managed to get her to poop in the toilet - she was 3 and a half at that time - by giving her a special diaper: they cut a hole in the bottom. She happily put the diaper on then sat on the toilet and all was fine. After a couple of days all she needed was the top elastic part of the diaper and of course that was gone too in no time.

We waited until Zoe was past her 2 year mark to start potty training. We started the week after Christmas and she was done training that week - BUT I used the same method as I did with Ezra and that requires 3 FULL days of potty training at home with no or little interuptions. We have an accident here and there, but she's been really good about letting us know when she has to go potty. Although, she may be reverting with her poop because she had an accident yesterday and one today...but then again it could be the miralax sneaking up on her.
Whatever you decide, you know her best and know what she can and can't handle right now. Go with your instinct and she'll be fine. =)

well she didn't poop today. But she did have a diaper on for nap time and then had one on before bed. So who knows... she was farting a lot so maybe she's just having bowel issues this week... today she peed in the potty 4 times and had 3 accidents. Which I think is pretty good for only her 3rd day. And they are all times she's telling me she has to go. But my hubby isn't being super supportive and thinks it's too early to be potty training her. So I'm not sure I'll continue right now. I know if I'm not around he will put a diaper on her and that will defeat the purpose... so not sure what to do. She goes to daycare all day tomorrow (Thursdays are my one day of work) and I'll put her in a diaper. She's not ready to be out and about in undies yet. Especially with all the excitment with the other kids. But I'll ask my day care provider to put her on the potty several times. I don't want to stop training her but we'll see. I know she is still young... Thanks for all the advice!!

Ezra was afraid to go poop in the potty for a long time - we had to resort to pull-ups once a day so he could go poop. and for Zoe we have to keep her on a Miralax schedule to help her go - she has been constipated since she was about 1 year old. They've done tests and nothing is "wrong", but to prevent any other issues her pedi and the GI doctor recommended the miralax schedule.
I suggest the same as Teesa good luck!

I think its a behavioral thing, too. Is she fearful of going poop on the potty? You are probably going to have to up the anty on the poop presents. ;)

No, just give her the water while she watches a TV show or something. But try to make a game of it so she'll actually drink that much. Another option is prune juice. Crazy, but it works too. It's a quick fix, but natural at that.

we blew through so many pairs of underwear and had so many accidents afterwards that not only did we use bloomers, but we also resorted to NOTHING or Sam's underwear! What a mess.
Carolina used to go once a day at 10am every single day. Now she goes once, maybe twice a week. Yesterday when I took her temp rectally I literally hit the poop with the thermometer. When I asked her why she wouldn't let her poopy out, she said she didn't want to. She finally pooped after nap time, but that was the first time in five days.
Her pedi wants us to start this laxative/stool softener and see if we can get her back on schedule with it after about two weeks. if not, we'll need to figure out what happens next.
But, I really think it's probably just a stubbornness issue. Maybe, at this point, it hurts too much to use the potty? I don't know.
Hopefully it'll go better for you! Carolina's been potty trained for over a year and this is where we are now.

did Carolina always go 5 days without pooping or is it a new thing when you started potty training? Madelyn usualy goes once a day or once every other day. Potty training hasn't been horrible yet (but I'm only on the 3rd day!! haha!!!) but I just don't want her to be in pain.
ps am I the only one who used her bloomers as underwear?? ;) we only have three pairs of underwear for her and while that normally gets me through the day I don't want to wash clothes every day. And we have lots of bloomers :) The next time I'm at the store I'll buy more undies but for now they work!

Carolina will go 5 days sometimes without pooping. We've resorting to giving her a laxative now, because we need to know if it's her body (is something wrong?) or if it's just her stubbornness.
Anyway, one thing that worked for her early on was those glycerin suppositories. That's sort of a last resort though - if she goes a couple more days, I'd try that. You can usually produce something within an hour.
Otherwise, make her drink 3 8 ounce glasses of water in a half hour and it should produce a poop within a couple hours. She'll also have to pee a lot, but it will at least show her what pooping on the potty is like.
Sorry this is rough for you and her - I hate this part of childhood, don't you?

she gets a potty treat (one m n m) for peeing on the potty. She hasn't gone poop on the potty in months. And when she did go in the past it was just a fluke that I happened to catch. But yes we did reward that with 3 m n m's. I need to buy some poopy treats though... we did cars with Zachary... maybe little dolls.

Madelyn is 22 months and for about the past month she has been showing a slight interest in potty training. Last month I didn't do too much with it because I knew the holidays were going to be crazy so why start when I couldn't be consistant. So Monday I put her in underwear. She has been pretty good. Going on the potty about 50% of the time which I think is pretty good for just starting! But she hasn't pooped since Sunday. I think she has to poop now. Anyways she is saying that she has to poop but I don't think she wants to poop on the potty, but she also doesn't want to poop in her underwear. I bet if I put a diaper on her she'd poop but I don't really want to do that either. BUT (haha lots of buts!) I don't want her stomach to hurt and get constipated. Any advice? For lunch we are going to have applesauce and see if that helps it along ;) Or do you think she's just not ready for potty training yet? I know it's early and she probably won't be trained for months and months yet but I am off work right now so I thought this would be a good time to try, when we can just stay home in undies all day. Thanks guys! I don't really remember potty training Zachary. I know he had accidents and I did train him but he woke up one morning and just said he wanted to wear underwear and was good from there on out... I think Madelyn is going to be tougher ;)
