My husband and I bought our crib from Walmart and our dresser from Target and we are both very impressed with the value of the furniture for the price. I think the most discouraging thing of all is having to put it together, because it comes in peices when you order it online. If you buy it in the store, you pay a little extra, and they will assemble it for you. But overall, everything meets safety standards, has rounded corners, not too much room in between the slats, and has a lot of space for storage and a non-toxic finish! Can't beat that for the price!

Ditto on the praise for Craigslist - I tried it for the first time yesterday and got a boppy nursing pillow for $5 and a baby einstein playmat for $25... great deals! I also Peg strollers for way cheap, but didn't get to them in time. Thanks Sarah!

We'll probably be buying our furniture from either JC Pennys, Walmart or Target. Like Carvjm said, don't see spending too much on this stuff. As long as it meets saftey standards, that's all I need to know. I keep talking about this book, I know...but in Baby Bargains, they say that Penny's furniture is the best quality for the price.

I've been looking at the WalMart 4 in 1 crib that has the attached changing table that converts to a nightstand. Has anyone bought one? I like what I can see of the crib from the web pictures and the box but the nightstand looks kind of lame.

I bought my second sons crib from wal-mart over 7 years ago. He, of course, only was in it for the first couple of years of life but I sold it at my yard sale before I moved from FL. (cause we thought we were done having children) and it was in EXCELLENT shape. I wouldnt think twice about buying my crib from Wal-mart. I think paying too much $$ for baby stuff is crazy cause they dont use it long but just my opinion

If there is a Craigslist message board from a town close to where you live, do not neglect it.

If you aren't familiar with craigslist (www.craigslist.org--then go to the right side of the page and click on your city), it is kind of like ebay, but for locals. Instead of bidding, you just e-mail the seller directly and either offer to pick it up, or make a lower offer.

My husband and I are Craigslist vultures. We check the baby sale page like every hour and swooping down on every good deal we can find. There is a board for our town, Ann Arbor, which often has pretty high end stuff being sold since this is a university town with quite a bit of money. The Detroit board has many more things being sold, and often being sold from homes in swanky auto-exec type suburbs.

We're all very lucky being due in October because we have plenty of time to hold out for exactly what we want instead of settling for the lowest prices at stores.

Here is what we've gotten on Craigslist so far (everything in new or like new condition):

Exersaucer Ultra--sold for $79.99 in stores, bought for $20

Baby Bjorn Active Carrier, new in an unopened box--sold for $119.99 on Amazon. , bought for $30

Fisher Price Baby Papasan Cradle Swing: sold for $139.99 on Amazon, bought for $40

Evenflo travel system--carrier/carseat, stroller, two carseat bases-- travel system sells for $199, two bases for $40 each...we paid $90 for everything

Peg Pereggo Prima Pappa leatherette high chair--discontinued in the color we bought, but others selling for $139.99, we bought for $50

Six speed Swingomatic baby swing--$89.99 on amazon, we got it for $30

Johnny Jumper--on amazon for $29.99, we got it for $12

BUT....our very best find was just today, an Oeuf style crib (we are total suckers for contemporary furniture design) that sells for $820 in furniture stores plus a sealy mattress for $75!! The crib is not an actual Oeuf, but it is really super cool. It is being sold by a baby's grandparents who no longer need it.

So, we've spent just over $350 for over $1000 worth of stuff.

Of course, it's not brand new, but if you go to someone's house to buy something and don't like it, you can always just say no thanks.

We have a walmart crib. We got it when i was pregnant with my daughter and we didnt have much money. I think we spent $100 on it. Its a 3 in one. My daughter used it as a crib and a toddler bed when she was ready for it. We just got her a princess bed and made the toddler bed back into a crib for this one. For $100 its been a really great bed.

I think there is nothing wrong with or unsafe about walmart cribs. That is where we bought our first crib almost 6 years ago and it is awsome we will be using it for our 3rd kid, then it will change to a toddler bed w/ railing.

I think that some people may have had a bad experience with there cribs, but that is the case ANYWHERE, no matter what the cost, or how nice the place.

good luck... I LOVE MINE from Walmart:)

I am sure that WALMART cribs aren't as HIGH quality as most but they seem fine to me.
We don't have a JC penny, all I have is Walmart. LOL. I'm going to check out our second hand store too that sells gently used baby stuff...

I was warned not to buy walmart/kmart cribs by my sister. She did and said it was a mistake. She said to go to JC Penny to get good cheap cribs. I found one I love that is 4-1 for 270.00 thats what were doing. The crib is supposed to last until the go to college so I think it's a good investment.

that is the one that I am looking at, no matter what color wood we get, and I love it. I like its style, and the drawer under it!

my sister bought a baby bed from Wal-Mart when she was pregnant with my 4 year old nephew... It looked great and she is using it now with baby # 2, a 7 month old little girl. Still in great shape... and I am certain she paid under $200 for it.... It was relative cheap, but has been good quality.

That is probably where I will get mine...

Anyone know what type of quality the furniture is from Walmart?? The prices are right, I'm just concerned about the quality.

Our daughter was born at home exactly one week early. We are so in love!

I was on there earlier. I am torn between the dark wood and the natural-- I think that we will end up with the natural, I'm not sure. I think its great! When we first found out I was looking and put together all the stuff that I would want- crib, changing table dreser combo, book shelf, chest of drawers, glider, and it all came to under $1000 including shipping and handling. I think that we will be getting all of out furnature from there too- its so much less money! They have the cribs that I like for under 200!

I can't afford a 300 dollar crib and I don't want the typical WHITE one. But I went surfing on Walmart.com and found awesome cheap cribs that are convertable and also in the dark wood stain that I wanted!
I even found a Nursery set for 200.00 including changing table, dresser and convertable crib!
WALMART rocks in that department... other than that they suck.. haha
