Leg Cramps

Pregnancy Symptoms and Discomforts
-- By Becky Hand, Registered and Licensed Dietitian

Nothing brings you out of a good night's sleep quicker than leg cramps. Although the exact cause is unknown, research has linked these muscle pains to excessive phosphorus and a lack of calcium and potassium in the diet. If you are experiencing leg cramps you may want to try the following suggestions:

  • Limit soda to one can a day or less.
  • Include 3 - 4 servings of milk or dairy products each day.
  • Consume fruits and vegetables that are high in potassium, such as bananas, tomatoes, potatoes, oranges, and peaches.
  • Limit processed foods such as lunchmeats, hot dogs, ham, and bacon. They're high in sodium.
  • Do not stand for long periods of time.
  • Rest on your side as often as possible.
  • Gently stretch the calf muscle. Flex your foot by pointing your toe toward your knee.
  • You may also add a heating pad on the cramped area, but do not use it for longer than 15 minutes at a time.

"if your foot is fighting you trying to move it backwards, have your hubby or mom or whoever is closest to you, force it back. it hurts to move it but after about 1 min the cramp goes away." -- DOUBLEANGEL935
"When you feel a cramp coming along just gently raise your toes towards your knees and this will stop the cramp. You don't have to get out of bed or anything. I have been doing this and it really works! Just try it! I didn't know that being low in calcium or potassium could bring on leg cramps...." -- MOMMYCASTILLO
"Drink a gatorade a day!

I had leg cramps so bad that one charlie horse would have my leg sore for 4 days. My OB told me to drink a gatorade, and sure enough, if I feel one coming on, I flex my toes up to my knees, and it passes. I haven't had a charlie horse since!" -- MESHLEMAN83
